About this project
This Swords awning uses a different material at the front from the fabric overhead. A drop front adds a lower shading element to a broad, six-metre canopy.
The main canopy provides shade from above, while the front screen sits below its leading edge. Using separate materials lets those two parts of the awning be considered individually, rather than assuming that everything needs to match.
Selecting each fabric for its own role
The front of an awning is viewed differently from the fabric overhead. Choosing it separately gives room to consider the outlook through the front as well as the appearance of the canopy above.
This Swords installation uses a screen material at that lower edge. When discussing a similar system, ask to see the proposed screen sample and consider the view from both sides. A material reference identifies the choice, but a sample is more helpful for understanding how it will look in use.
Solution and installation
The installation has a 3.5m projection and an anthracite frame. Motorised operation and a wind sensor are included. The photographs show how the drop front becomes part of the awning’s appearance when it is in use.

FAQ — Swords, Dublin
Which materials are used on the Swords awning?
The main canopy is U095 fabric, while the front uses screen fabric 92-51176.
Is the drop front the same as the overhead canopy?
It is a separate fabric element below the front edge. It adds shade at a different angle from the main canopy.
Can I judge a screen fabric from its code alone?
The code identifies the material, but a sample and its product information are needed to assess its appearance and suitability. Do not assume every screen offers the same visibility or privacy.
