About this project
This Navan awning reaches well out from the building without needing a six-metre span along the wall. Lighting follows the arms beneath the fabric, adding another use after daylight fades.
The installation measures 4.11m wide with a 3.5m projection. These proportions make the outward reach an important part of the design. The frame is anthracite, with D307 fabric chosen for the canopy.
Thinking about where people sit after sunset
Arm lighting puts the light source beneath the fabric, following the structure that extends into the outdoor area. That position is worth looking at from the seating area rather than only from a view facing the building.
For a similar installation, consider where a table or chairs will normally stand. The canopy dimensions establish the covered shape, while the location of the lights affects the evening setting underneath it. Looking at both together makes the choice more practical.
Solution and installation
The motorised system makes the canopy adjustable, so it can be retracted when overhead shade is no longer wanted. A wind sensor is also included. In the evening, the LEDs sit within the structure beneath the fabric.
